United States of America

Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP)

The American Speech and Language Hearing Association (ASHA) requires that all qualifying programs be accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA). More information on the educational requirements according to the ASHA guidelines can be found on their website.

U.S. News ranked the top Master’s programs across the USA in 2012. Though slightly outdated, the rankings have not drastically changed over the past few years and the Bachelor’s programs are equally as good at the majority of schools listed (Such as my undergraduate program at the University of Florida ranked #15 for grad programs!).

General Application Requirements for the USA

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). If Bachelor’s degree is in something other than CSD, the undergraduate core courses can be completed through a post-baccalaureate program prior to beginning the Master’s program.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher– or an equivalent award from internationally educated students.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score– average score requirements vary by university.
  • Letters of recommendation from professors, employers, etc. (approx. 2-3 required).
  • An essay
